This is something I have banged on about so many times but still far to many ignore the advice. To be honest the advice is not that hard to follow, always make sure as far as possible that your website is the first source of what you publish online, everything else is secondary.
Take this example of something I see A LOT of photographers do.
They have some kind of promotion like a free photo shoot or discount, the first thing they do is post about on Facebook or Twitter forgetting that the information disappears so quickly. Instead of posting on social media first do a post on your website first and then share the link of that post on your social media profiles.
Treating your site as the first source of information essentially helps you in 3 ways;
- It becomes the first indexed source of the information posted.
- By sharing the link you drive visitors to your website.
- The information does not get lost so quickly.
Remember that the more active YOUR site is the better it will perform on the search engines, so post first, then share and enable others to also share as long as you traffic flowing to your site.
