I know a few photographers that use the SmugMug platform and that got me thinking, how SEO friendly is the system and what SEO features do you have access to when using SmugMug.
The main thing about search engine optimisation to take note of is that it is an ever changing environment, the one thing that never changes though is relevancy and consistency, your information ALWAYS has to remain relevant if you want your website to reach the top ranks for photography related search terms.
So after some digging I found a article on SmugMug that explains what SEO features you have access to and how to modify them.
Here are the SEO setting you can apply:
- Site Maps
- Homepage Meta Description
- Homepage Meta Keywords
- Page Title Bar
- Folder Meta Description and Meta Keywords
- Gallery Titles
- Gallery Descriptions and Meta Keywords
- Keywords, Filenames, and Captions
Now those are all pretty basic “101” SEO setting, none the less you have to apply them so that search engines correctly index your site. Applying these settings will not only boost your search engine ranks but you also gain better credibility for helping the search engines better index your site.
The last thing SmugMug mentions in their article is to “Create and Maintain a Blog”
Running a blog is by far your most powerful tool because blog equals content and content in the SEO world is king. You can write whatever you want as long as it’s relevant to (in this case) photography.
The blog setup with SmugMug does not seem very easy to set up and you have to use a 3rd party platform like WordPress to run it and then interlinks the 2, it’s a bit of a schlep really.
Personally I prefer to use WordPress for everything, have it all run under one “roof”.
